As family and friends of Sheri Nelson, we celebrate and remember her life.
About a year and a half ago, Sheri was diagnosed with a very rare form of cervical cancer. Though the odds were against her she wanted nothing more than to stay with her family and watch her grandchildren grow up. Her strength and determination while battling this disease were truly amazing. She took on every new challenge with a smile and a positive attitude, never giving up on even the toughest of days. Sadly, on July 19, 2020 our true angel on Earth was called to Heaven. Though we will miss her more than words can ever say, we know she is in a better place and is no longer in pain. She will always be with us in our hearts and our memories.
Sheri was born and raised, by loving parents, outside of Richmond, VA, alongside her brother and sister. Growing up, she loved working outside with her dad on various projects. Preferring learning about cars to helping clean the house. She was brought up to be kind, thoughtful and strong. She was also pretty stubborn but you will never find anyone as loving and loyal as Sheri was.
She loved animals, the outdoors, the mountains, trying new things, music, her sports car, sweets (especially chocolate cake), VCU basketball and so many other things but most importantly her family. There wasn't anything she couldn't do if she put her mind to it.
While attending VCU she met and fell for the love of her life. They married and raised three awesome kids that she was incredibly proud of. Their two sons got married and she gained to daughters-in-law that she truly loved. In 2017 she became a grandmother, twice! And in 2019 she had two more grandchildren. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she loved nothing more than when the whole family was together.
She was truly the most incredible person that you could ever meet. Her smile lit up a room and her laughter brought so much joy to those around her. While she may no longer be with us her strength and spirit live within her children and grandchildren, her greatest legacy.
We will never give up in the fight against cancer. Thank you for standing beside us, for remembering Sheri and for considering a gift to the V Foundation in Sheri's memory.
Cancer research is important to us because we know, someday, cancer will be a disease of the past. We have chosen to designate donations to the V Foundation for Cancer Research because Sheri embodied the same spirit as Jim Valvano to "Don't Give Up ... Don't Ever Give Up!"®
