Pedal to the Pines
Pedal to the Pines was formed in 2013 with the mission of raising money through cycling to support cancer research. Each year, organizer John Sadler and his Pedal to the Pines team host a single-day 100+ mile bicycle ride from Northwest Indiana to Grand Junction, Michigan. Through word of mouth and social media, the event has grown from a small three-man team of bicyclists, to a 40-50 person event in just a few short years.
Though it is not always easy to plan and execute a successful event in their spare time, John and Dan make it work. With the help of their significant others, they are able to meet two to three times in the winter and spring to organize the bike ride, the after party and plan their sponsorship asks. Once the weather begins to get warm, an hour or so a week is spent organizing training bike rides and raising awareness for the cause. Each year, they refine their plans and make necessary changes, and the planning process gets easier.
John and Dan both lost their fathers to cancer and many of their friends and family have been affected as well. Their passion for cycling and knowing they are making a difference is what keeps them going. Every year, their event continues to grow and inspire new people to find a love for cycling, and through that, raising money for the V Foundation. It is always one of the highlights of their year. The ultimate goal is having hundreds of riders join them on their annual tour through southwest Michigan. As long as they are able to physically do it, they do not see either of them stopping anytime soon!
