Brandenburg & Friends
The Brandenburg siblings are passionate about finding cures for cancer. For nearly 20 years, they have been raising money for cancer-related charities. Cancer is not a foreign idea to the Brandenburg’s - they lost both of their parents to the disease. One evening, before their mother passed, the family was gathered in their living room watching ESPN and they saw the recording of Jim Valvano’s famous 1993 ESPY speech.
The siblings decided from then on to support the V Foundation. After all, their late father had played basketball for NC State University, where Jim Valvano coached. Cancer continues to affect the family. One of the Brandenburg sisters has survived colorectal cancer while another sister was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Undaunted, the Brandenburgs keep fighting and fundraising to fund cures. Every fall in Greensboro, N.C., the family hosts a backyard barbeque with food, drinks, an auction, and live music. To date, the Brandenburg & Friends Slam Dunk Against Cancer event has raised more than $100,000 for cancer research.
